US Coast Guard Lake Tahoe: The crystal blue waters can lure water-goers into a false sense of security. Unpredictable mountain weather patterns can change rapidly, turning a calm outing on the lake into a rough day on the sea. High winds and eight-foot waves are not uncommon on Lake Tahoe. “I don’t think people realize how dangerous this lake can get in a few minutes,” says Petty Officer 2nd Class Kauakea Colon. It’s dangerous. You just don’t know what lies beneath the surface. Depending on the weather, it can kill you.” Stretching 22 miles long and 12 miles wide, the crew has a lot of water to cover. The station responds to about 150 search and rescue cases each summer. “We’re non-stop when the busy season gets here. Memorial Day through Labor Day, you don’t sit down at all,” says Petty Officer 2nd Class Megan Archer. “We’re up from sunrise until midnight, then we go to bed to get our eight hours of rest and we’re up the next day doing the same exact thing again.”

  4. Lake Tahoe boating conditions are similar to the ocean: deep, rough and windy; not like your typical low altitude lake back home and can get dangerous, very quickly. Pontoon boats are a less than optimal rental in these conditions, choose wisely. That’s why the US Coast Guard is stationed on Lake Tahoe!

  - FYI: Drive it yourself boat rentals on Tahoe are base model old motorboats most often seen being towed back to shore. They’re also more expensive than the top of the line Babes on a Boat fleet.

- - Crowding a boat to the manufacturer’s passenger capacity to “fit my entire group,” is not safe or legal
  - The Tahoe wind arrives almost every day around 2pm creating waves which can swamp, disable and sink over-crowded boats

  - All water sports participants must pass a deep water swim test. Non swimmers will not be permitted to participate in boat watersports, paddleboarding or aqua-lily floating island. They are welcome on the boat but must wear a PFD the entire time.
  - Intentionally jumping off the waketube while being towed on Lake Tahoe may result in the jumper getting a $5000 fine from the USCG Sector San Francisco (Lake Tahoe) for ‘interfering with the safe operation of a vessel.’ Learn more: 1, 2, 3 Never jump off the waketube while underway.

- - Reduces the vessel’s handling and safety characteristics in Lake Tahoe’s big wind and large waves
  - Reduces the vessel’s performance
  - Reduces comfort for passengers

Lake Tahoe Presents Ocean Like Conditions at 6253 Feet Above Sea Level:

- - Less than optimal for inexperienced drive your own boat renters
  - Wind and waves build extremely fast at our elevation presenting overcrowded boats with extreme challenges
  - If you don’t have rough water high wind boating experience, leave the driving to Tahoe Jet Boats
